Far Out Recordings is now in its 11th year with over 40 albums and 60 12"s released to date, each one reinforcing Far Out's colossal status in the alternative jazz/Latin/dance scenes. Joe Davis is the owner of Far Out Recordings and his commitment to exposing Brazilian music over the years could be argued as crucial to the increased world-wise credibility and popularity of Brazilian music.

"Going to Brazil was a way of learning about the music. I'd find records and sell them back home to a small amount of people mainly DJs, people like Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Nicola Conte, UFO, John Armstrong and Takemura".

Joe brought together a load of Brazilian artists for his first label compilation, ‘Friends From Rio', to re-record a selection of Brazilian classics as well as new material including the Brazilian anthems "Os Grillos" and "Para Lennon E McCartney". The album put the label on the map and set out the Far Out philosophy.

The roll-call of artists who have recorded for the label reads like a who's who of Brazilian music - Marcos Valle, Joyce, Azymuth, Milton Nascimento, The Ipanemas, Celia Vaz - the list goes on.

The list of those musicians who have remixed and worked with our artists is a guide to the producers cutting it in the leftfield scene: Spiritual South, 4Hero, Seiji (Bugz in the Attic), Jazzanova, Osunlade, Da Lata, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Roni Size, Incognito, Troubleman and Masters At Work.

Over the years Joe has hand-picked tracks for highly regarded record companies releasing seminal compilations dedicated to Brazilian/Latin Jazz. ‘Blue Brazil' (Blue Note), ‘Brazilika 1 & 2' (Talkin' Loud) and Brasil (Soul Jazz).

Innovation is top of the Far Out agenda, exemplified in 2005 by the new beginnings of a 7" collection. Currently there are five seven inch releases planned between October and the end of the year. Kicking off are two choice cuts from Joyce's album followed by new signings Democustico and then Finnish afro beat band, The Future Warriors. In addition expect surprises from Troubleman and Brazilian rock band, Camarades

Joe Davis, owner of Far Out explains the vibe behind the 7" series: "As a record collector I've always been a fan of 7"s and this series is a chance for us to experiment a bit more, work with different people and do different things that you often can't do with albums".

DJ Joe Davis specialises in spinning Brazilian, Latin Jazz and Broken Beat/Electronica. However, many years of dipping into world-wide vinyl vaults means Joe's repertoire is never the same and can twist and mutate at the drop of a ...
